On Tuesday, a judge in Tallahassee ordered Florida State University (FSU) student Phoenix Ikner, accused of a mass shooting that left two dead and six injured, to remain jailed without bond. This decision came during Ikner’s first court appearance since the April 17 incident. Leon County Judge Monique Richardson restricted Ikner from contacting the victims and appointed public defenders Megan Long and Randall Harper to represent him. The 20-year-old was shot by responding officers, which ended the shooting spree, and he appeared in court via video from a nearby jail.
Ikner faces two counts of first-degree murder and seven counts of attempted first-degree murder. Notably, he is the stepson of a local sheriff’s deputy and allegedly used his stepmother’s former service weapon during the attack, which caused panic on campus and in the surrounding community. After being briefly hospitalized, Ikner was formally charged and transferred to a jail in Wakulla County, a standard procedure for inmates related to Leon County law enforcement.
The attack unfolded shortly before lunchtime, with Ikner reportedly lingering near a parking garage before moving through campus while firing his gun. Police intervened within five minutes, resulting in Ikner being shot. The motive behind the violence has not been disclosed. If convicted of the murder charges, Ikner could potentially face the death penalty. This case has intensified discussions about gun violence and campus safety across the state.
