On Memorial Day evening, a boat explosion and fire in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, led to nearly a dozen individuals, including two children, being hospitalized. The incident occurred around 5:45 p.m. near the New River Triangle, close to the Lauderdale Yacht Club, where 13 people were aboard the boat when the explosion happened. The cause of the explosion remains unclear, but preliminary reports suggest it may have been linked to a gas leak during fueling.
Witnesses reported a dramatic fireball erupting from the boat, which threw people into the water. Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue spokesman Frank Guzman confirmed that 11 people were initially treated at Broward Health Medical Center for severe burns, with some later transferred to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where a burn unit is located. Among the patients received were eight adults and two children, with varying conditions; one adult required intubation.
Antonio Rivero, who was on the boat with his family, indicated that a spark might have ignited the explosion, resulting in burns for several individuals. Rescuers, including good Samaritans from nearby boats, quickly came to aid those in distress, as eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes of individuals suffering severe injuries.
Fort Lauderdale Police, the U.S. Coast Guard, and other agencies responded to the incident, conducting an investigation to determine its cause. Fortunately, crews also managed to rescue a dog onboard the ill-fated vessel, which was not injured. This incident highlighted the rapid response of bystanders and emergency teams in a crisis.
