Vermont EMT Rescues Woman from Drowning in Maine
YORK, Maine (WCAX) – A vacation turned heroic for Erik Hanson, a Vermont EMT who sprang into action to save a woman from drowning off the coast of York, Maine. While visiting the area with his family, Hanson encountered a critical situation on Saturday when he saw a woman struggling in the water amid large waves.
York Fire Chief David Apgar reported that the woman’s troubles were exacerbated by the frigid water, with temperatures around 50 degrees raising concerns about hypothermia. “Hypothermia sets in quickly,” Apgar noted, emphasizing the urgency of the rescue.
Upon noticing the distress, Hanson quickly informed his wife to move their children away from the scene, recognizing the gravity of the situation. He sprinted toward the woman, performing CPR and effectively reviving her until local authorities arrived.
The victim was subsequently transported to a Boston hospital and is currently reported to be in stable condition. Authorities highlighted the absence of lifeguards at the beach, as their season does not start until the last week of June.
Hanson’s swift response has garnered attention, illustrating the vital role that training and preparedness play in emergency situations. As residents and visitors enjoy the waters this summer, local officials stress the importance of safety measures.
Reporter Connor Ullathorne will provide further coverage on this remarkable story during the Channel 3 News at 6.
