Welch Unites Businesses and Manufacturers to Discuss Trade War

Senator Welch Holds Roundtable on Impact of Tariffs in Vermont

Manchester, VT – U.S. Senator Peter Welch hosted a roundtable on Wednesday at The Orvis Company to discuss the detrimental effects of global tariffs and President Trump’s trade war on Vermont’s businesses and manufacturers. The event gathered leaders from various sectors, including homebuilding, retail, and food manufacturing.

Welch’s roundtable follows his recent diplomatic visit to Ottawa, where he met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. "Hearing directly from Vermonters about how tariffs are impacting our local economy is crucial," Welch stated. He expressed concern over the rhetoric and policies that have strained the historically strong relationship between Vermonters and Canadians. "Nobody wins a trade war," he added, emphasizing the need for Congress to reclaim its role in trade policy.

Attendees included representatives from notable Vermont businesses such as Orvis, Vermont Country Store, and RAD Innovations. They shared firsthand accounts of how tariffs have affected their operations and livelihoods. Welch pointed out that these economic challenges not only impact companies but also families and farmers across the state.

In response to these concerns, Senator Welch has been vocal against Trump’s tariff policies, co-sponsoring multiple bipartisan resolutions aimed at repealing tariffs on Canada and restoring congressional authority over trade matters. He has also proposed bills to limit executive power in tariff imposition, particularly affecting small businesses.

This Manchester roundtable is part of a broader initiative by Welch, who has previously hosted similar discussions in Stowe, Newport, and St. Albans. Through these dialogues, he aims to amplify the voices and stories of those affected by the ongoing trade turmoil.
