Federal Agents Detain Ten Workers at Newport Construction Site
Newport, VT – In a surprising turn of events, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents detained ten individuals at a construction site in Newport on Thursday. The workers were reportedly subcontracted through Patriot Building Systems, based in Londonderry, New Hampshire. Patriot Building Systems did not provide any comments when contacted for information regarding the incident.
According to the Vermont Asylum Assistance Project, the workers included at least five individuals who presented proof of their immigration status. These ten men were subsequently transported to the Northwest State Correctional Facility in St. Albans. The asylum assistance organization stated that the men with valid documentation could potentially be released as early as Friday.
In a related effort, seven women who were also detained at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility in South Burlington were placed on a commercial flight to Chicago early Friday morning. However, it was reported that the detainees did not disembark in Chicago, and the flight eventually continued to Washington, D.C.
