Letter to the Editor: Advocating for Legal Aid in Vermont: A $15 Million Case

Access to Justice: A Transformative Investment for Vermont

Montpelier, VT – The Vermont Bar Foundation emphasizes that access to justice is essential for democracy, guaranteeing that all individuals can understand and exercise their rights under the law, irrespective of their socio-economic status. The foundation funds legal services that have brought significant benefits to countless Vermonters, as illustrated by new data from Vermont Law and Graduate School (VLGS).

A recent VLGS report highlights the remarkable economic return on investment from its pro bono legal clinics. With a focus on Vermont-centric initiatives, just $1.36 million in operational funding has generated over $15 million in economic benefits—equating to an impressive return of $11 for every dollar invested. This underscores the crucial role these clinics play, providing no-cost legal assistance to those in dire need.

VLGS is not only a beacon for legal education but also an integral part of the state’s justice framework. By offering hands-on experiences, it prepares future lawyers while simultaneously addressing community needs. The school’s commitment to public interest law exemplifies the values of fairness and equity that Vermont cherishes.

Since 2014, legal advocates in South Royalton have aided over 700 veterans and supported around 200 families yearly, generating more than $6.3 million in impact. Initiatives like the Small Business Law Clinic have assisted nearly 300 small businesses, particularly in recovery from severe flooding, resulting in $3.1 million in economic boosts. Other clinics focusing on food justice, immigration, and renewable energy further enhance community well-being statewide.

The Vermont Bar Foundation acknowledges the vital role of donors and partners, including the Vermont Supreme Court, in sustaining these efforts. Legal aid represents not just charity but vital infrastructure and economic development. In an era where trust in institutions wavers, Vermont’s investment in accessible legal services stands as a crucial economic engine and a moral imperative.

Let’s continue to advocate for and expand this indispensable resource.
