British Man Indicted for Smuggling US Military Tech and Harassment of Beijing Critic
A British national, John Miller, 63, has been indicted for allegedly attempting to smuggle sensitive U.S. military technology to China while orchestrating the harassment of a critic of the Beijing regime. Miller, alongside 43-year-old Cui Guanghai from China and an unidentified U.S. permanent resident, was indicted by federal grand juries in Milwaukee and Los Angeles on Friday.
The charges against them include conspiracy to commit interstate stalking, as well as violations of the Arms Export Control Act. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche emphasized the seriousness of the allegations, labeling the actions as “a blatant assault on both our national security and our democratic values.” Both defendants are accused of targeting the U.S. resident for exercising his constitutional right to free speech.
The indictment details a disturbing campaign of harassment, including the installation of a tracking device on the victim’s vehicle and the slashing of its tires. Furthermore, the two allegedly purchased and destroyed artistic statues created by the victim that depicted Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife. To further pressure the victim, they allegedly paid two accomplices approximately $36,500 to convince him to remove his artwork from public display.
If convicted, Miller and Cui face significant prison sentences, including up to 20 years for violations of the Arms Export Control Act and 10 years for smuggling. Both men are currently in Serbia, with U.S. authorities coordinating with Serbian officials for potential extradition. The British government is providing consular assistance to Miller and is in contact with his family regarding the situation.
