Burlington Celebrates Athletic Excellence with New Hall of Fame Inductees
Burlington, Ontario—On Tuesday night, the Burlington Sports Hall of Fame welcomed five new inductees, recognizing exceptional contributions to the community’s sporting landscape. This esteemed honor has been awarded to over 70 individuals over the past 17 years.
The Burlington Blaze, who made history by winning the Minto Cup in 2023 as the only city team to achieve this, received the Don Green Award of Distinction during the celebration at the Burlington Golf and Country Club.
The class of 2025 includes wheelchair basketball player Brandon Wagner, soccer builder Les Bell, touch football organizer and coach Dave Nelson, field hockey goalkeeper Kathryn Williams, and volleyball star Terry Martin.
Brandon Wagner, a former spinal cord injury victim, became a national champion, thanks to the unwavering support of Chris Chandler. Wagner’s efforts in wheelchair basketball have redefined competitive play, and his story of perseverance resonates with many.
Les Bell’s journey into soccer leadership began serendipitously when he was elected president of the Burlington Soccer League, which expanded from 10 teams to 84 under his guidance. He also co-founded a tournament that raised over $114,000 for local hospitals.
Dave Nelson, a dedicated coach with a 50-year career, has helped multiple high school teams secure championships while significantly promoting men’s touch football in Burlington. He cherishes the lasting relationships with his players, feeling honored by their recognition.
Field hockey’s Kathryn Williams, now coaching at McMaster University, has represented Canada at international events, including the World Cup and Pan Am Cup, while nurturing the next generation of players.
Terry Martin, an international volleyball star, was unable to attend but has left a lasting mark both in Canada and abroad.
These inductions not only honor individual achievements but celebrate Burlington’s rich sporting culture, inspiring future generations.
