Valley News: Vermont Bowling Alleys Embrace Retro Charm Amid Business Trends

Bowlerama: A Beacon of Community and Tradition in a Declining Sport

Rutland, VT – Amid the towering pins and enthusiastic cheers, the RutlandBowlerama stands as a cherished institution in the local community, hosting the annual Green Mountain Open Tournament. Rick Wilbur, a familiar face who has been part of the Bowlerama scene for over 50 years, reflects on its enduring familial spirit. His son, Jon, made headlines in 2019 as the first Vermonter to bowl a 900 series, showcasing the alley’s legacy of talent.

Owner Chip Forte, who joined the family-run business shortly after its founding in 1965, notes the expansion from 16 to 32 lanes, many still featuring their classic wood construction. Yet, despite Bowlerama’s storied past, regulars lament a decline in attendance. Lifelong resident Ron Carrara comments on the stark changes since the bustling ‘70s, where the alley would be at full capacity.

As digital entertainment proliferates, traditional bowling centers have faced closure. Nationally, the number of bowling alleys has dropped from 5,800 in 2003 to approximately 4,500 in 2019, as establishments shift to more modern experiences.

Despite the challenges, Bowlerama continues to thrive, particularly during leagues and tournaments. Regulars highlight the importance of community and nostalgia in retaining their love for the sport. Wilbur’s involvement extends beyond leisure; he coaches local youth and supports regional competitions.

Not far away, Valley Bowl continues a similar mission, offering affordable bowling and fostering local talent. Owners Karen and Wayne Warner emphasize their aim to instill a love for the sport in younger generations.

As the popularity of bowling wanes, both venues remain committed to preserving the joy and camaraderie of a sport steeped in tradition, demonstrating that even as the landscape changes, community spirit can endure.
