A badly burned body was discovered in Stone Mountain Park, Georgia, on Saturday morning by a hiker who reported it to authorities around 8:18 a.m. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting local law enforcement in the investigation, with an autopsy scheduled for Monday by the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office. The body was found on the side of the mountain away from the main walking trail, approximately 100 yards from the Summit Skyride, a cable car attraction. According to John Bankhead, spokesperson for the Stone Mountain Department of Public Safety, the area is not remote but is infrequently hiked.
Bankhead described the incident as “odd” and stated that long-time park staff had not encountered anything like it before. Investigators may have a potential identity for the deceased man based on personal belongings found nearby, including a vehicle. Additionally, the fire associated with the body is under investigation by arson investigators from the DeKalb County Fire Rescue Department.
Stone Mountain Park features various attractions, including a lakeside resort and is known for its controversial large relief sculpture depicting Confederate leaders. The sculpture has been a focal point for demonstrations and differing public opinions since its completion phases stretched from 1924 to 1972. The park, located about 20 miles east of Atlanta, is managed by a state authority along with an amusement park contractor. The ongoing investigation seeks to clarify the circumstances surrounding the young man’s death and confirm his identity.
