Press Release: Care Tips for Tyler’s Beloved Azaleas
As Tyler embraces spring, the spotlight is on its renowned azaleas, which require attentive care to maintain their stunning beauty. Local horticulturist, Dr. Greg Grant, emphasizes that now is the perfect time for fertilizing these East Texas gems. He advises using an “acid lover” fertilizer designed for azaleas, camellias, and gardenias, noting that a light, measured approach is far more effective than large doses. Fertilization should occur lightly as spring growth begins, ideally by mid-July. Evenly distributing the fertilizer across the planting bed and ensuring it’s watered in thoroughly will promote healthy growth.
Pruning azaleas should be done right after blooming, coinciding with fertilization. Dr. Grant recommends light shearing to encourage fuller blooms next spring, cautioning against pruning in late summer to avoid cutting off future flower buds. Additionally, fresh mulch, particularly pine straw or shredded pine bark, is crucial now, as it helps retain moisture and suppress weeds—though it should not touch the plant’s stems to prevent rot.
During East Texas’s hot summers, azaleas require consistent moisture, with about an inch of water every two weeks. Yellowing leaves may indicate iron chlorosis, which can be remedied with iron sulfate. Furthermore, gardeners should be aware of the azalea lace bug, a common pest that can harm stressed plants. A granular systemic insecticide applied post-bloom can offer protection.
By meeting the specific needs of azaleas—acidic soil, regular moisture, and partial shade—gardeners can enjoy the brilliant blooms that define Tyler’s spring landscape for years to come.
