During a record-breaking Memorial Day weekend, “Lilo & Stitch” and “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning” dominated the box office, contributing to a robust $149 million total in North America, up over 120% from the previous year. Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch,” a live-action hybrid, topped the charts again, earning $63 million across 4,410 theaters, bringing its domestic total to $280.1 million and $610.8 million globally. In its seventh weekend, “Sinners” managed to stay strong, earning $5.2 million and totaling $267.1 million domestically.
“Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning” secured second place with $27.3 million from 3,861 locations, totaling $122.6 million domestically so far, while its global tally reached $353.8 million, partly aided by a $76.1 million international boost, including $25.2 million from its recent debut in China.
Among newcomers, Sony’s “Karate Kid: Legends” opened strongly with $21 million from 3,809 locations, attracting families despite mixed reviews, bolstered by an A- CinemaScore. The film features Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio and has a worldwide total of $47 million. In fourth place, “Final Destination: Bloodlines” made $10.8 million, becoming the franchise’s highest-grossing installment with a global total of $229.3 million. Rounding out the top five was A24’s horror film “Bring Her Back,” earning $7.1 million.
Wes Anderson’s “The Phoenician Scheme” debuted in select theaters, grossing $270,000. The summer box office outlook remains promising, aiming for a $4 billion total, with May expected to yield $973 million, a 75% increase from May 2024.
