Terry Precision Cycling Challenges Tariffs in Court: A Call for Survival Amidst Trade Turbulence
Burlington, VT – Terry Precision Cycling, a company heavily impacted by recent tariff increases enacted by former President Trump, has taken legal action alongside four other U.S. businesses to challenge the legality of these tariffs. Nik Holm, the company’s president, described the tariffs as “an existential threat,” significantly raising production costs and pushing retail prices beyond what customers are willing to pay.
The tariffs on imported materials from nations like China, Taiwan, and Vietnam have increased costs to the point where a popular cycling short’s price jumped from an expected $165 to $199.95, adding nearly $50 directly to consumer costs. Holm explained that while they are committed to domestic production in Spokane, many essential materials must still be sourced internationally, complicating their supply chain.
On Wednesday, the U.S. Court of International Trade ruled in favor of the companies, deeming the tariffs illegal. This decision was temporarily halted by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, with the case potentially heading to the Supreme Court. Despite the administration’s confidence in the legality of the tariffs, Holm expressed optimism that the judiciary would ultimately quash the tariffs, allowing his company to regain footing.
Terry Precision Cycling, which employs just 16 people, has been struggling with supply chain disruptions and rising costs. Holm stated that the firm has pivoted its focus from innovation to finding ways to mitigate tariffs, stating, “We and everybody else are stuck between a rock and a hard place currently.” He called the lawsuit “not a political move,” but rather a necessary step for the survival of the company.
