The Great Oven Debate: Is It Necessary in a Campervan?
As more families embrace life on the road, a lively debate has arisen within the camping community: is a traditional oven essential in a campervan? This topic has gained attention, particularly among van dwellers and users of caravan forums.
Kat Sobczyk, a mother of three who has spent the last two and a half years traveling across Australia, shares her insights. Initially, Kat and her husband Stuart purchased a van equipped with an oven. However, they soon found it cumbersome, especially with young children. “The oven was slow,” Kat explained. “We needed to cook quickly, and spending 90% of our time off-grid made gas bottles a hassle.” After this realization, they opted for a van without an oven, replacing it with a stovetop and an air fryer, ultimately shedding 38 kilos in weight and enhancing their storage space.
Now on their fourth van, the Sobczyks utilize a $54 induction cooktop from Kmart, which allows for outdoor cooking and saves energy. “Cooking in the van can ruin the camping vibe,” said Kat, emphasizing the benefits of cooking outside. When solar power is unavailable, they turn to a gas Weber BBQ, which has become a versatile kitchen alternative.
The Sobczyks’ stance is met with mixed responses online. While many agree that ovens occupy unnecessary space, others swear by their necessity for traditional cooking. Some campers relish the idea of using an oven for comfort food on rainy days, while others prefer to keep their cooking outside, claiming that it enhances their outdoor experience.
In the end, the conversation surrounding ovens in campervans is as varied as the lifestyles they support, leaving many to find their unique balance in tiny living.
