College Student’s Detention Sheds Light on Increasing Deportation Risks for Dreamers

Ximena Arias-Cristobal, a 19-year-old undocumented immigrant from Mexico, experienced severe consequences from a mistaken traffic stop by Dalton police on May 5. Accused of an improper turn and driving without a valid license, Arias-Cristobal was eventually detained for two days in jail and spent over two weeks in an immigration detention center despite having her charges dropped. This incident has highlighted the precarious situation faced by approximately 2.5 million young undocumented immigrants, or Dreamers, under President Trump’s administration, which has intensified deportations.

Arias-Cristobal, who has lived in Georgia since age four, described the emotional toll of the incident, feeling that her life will never return to the way it was. She is a dedicated student pursuing a degree in finance and economics with the help of a national scholarship from TheDream.US, which supports undocumented youth. The mistaken stop and subsequent detention demonstrate the vulnerabilities Dreamers face, even when they abide by the law.

Advocates, including Gaby Pacheco from TheDream.US, emphasize the urgent need for permanent legal protections and a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers, asserting that they contribute significantly to American society. Despite past promises from Trump to work on a solution for Dreamers, the current administration’s focus remains on deporting undocumented individuals labeled as criminals. Meanwhile, other Dreamers, like Wualner Sauceda and Marcelo Gomes Da Silva, have also faced detention and deportation under similar circumstances.

As Arias-Cristobal navigates her immigration status, she hopes to inspire others and advocate for the rights of undocumented immigrants, emphasizing her identity as a Georgian and an American despite her undocumented status.
