Israeli Soldiers Prevent Media Access to West Bank Villages During Oscar Winners’ Tour

On Monday, Israeli soldiers prevented journalists from accessing two Palestinian villages in the West Bank during a planned tour organized by the directors of the Oscar-winning film “No Other Land.” The film highlights the escalating violence from Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the region. Co-director Yuval Abraham posted a video on social media showing a soldier denying entry to international journalists due to a military order, claiming that the area was under a live-fire training zone. Basel Adra, a Palestinian co-director from the area, expressed that the military’s actions were an attempt to suppress coverage of the situation.

The military specifically stated that entry into Khallet A-Daba was prohibited due to training exercises, while Tuwani, though not in a live-fire zone, was accessed only by select individuals to prevent disturbances. Adra criticized this action, suggesting it impeded honest reporting on the escalating violence since the Hamas attack on Israel triggered the current conflict.

Reports from local residents indicate a rise in settler aggression since October 7, including home demolitions and the destruction of property, which has led to fears of potential Palestinian expulsion. On the same day journalists were denied entry, settlers reportedly invaded Khallet A-Daba, taking over caves used by residents and damaging their belongings.

“No Other Land,” which won numerous awards, portrays the struggle against Israeli military actions aimed at demolishing these villages. The film is a joint effort among Palestinian and Israeli directors, spotlighting life under Israeli occupation. With over 500,000 settlers residing in various Israeli-built settlements within the West Bank, the Palestinian population faces significant challenges in achieving a viable statehood amidst ongoing military governance.
