Chef Robert Barral of Café Provence Returns to Work After Violent Attack
BRANDON, Vt. — Chef Robert Barral, the beloved owner of Café Provence, has returned to his bustling kitchen, fully back on schedule after enduring a brutal attack in April. Barral was stabbed by a former employee, Jozef Eller, who also broke five of Barral’s ribs during the incident before fleeing. "I feel that I’m very lucky to be alive today," Barral stated, reflecting on the harrowing experience.
NBC 5 recently spoke with Barral, who is now preparing for a cooking class two months post-recovery. With a passion for culinary education, he enthusiastically shares his cooking secrets with aspiring chefs and home cooks. "My best reward is to hear from them if they used the recipe and if they liked it," he said.
Originally from France, Barral established Café Provence on Center Street, which is set to celebrate its 21st anniversary in July. While he has made a remarkable recovery, he continues to experience some discomfort in his left arm. Nevertheless, Barral credits the immense support from his wife and the local community for his healing journey.
Community members rallied around Barral during his recovery, sending heartfelt messages and well-wishes through social media and cards. "I must say, I feel blessed," he remarked about the outpouring of love and concern.
Looking ahead, Barral aims to share his culinary passion more broadly by publishing his own cookbook. As he resumes his culinary duties, the chef reflects on his journey and the resilience it has instilled in him.
