Mo Willems’ ‘Pigeon’ Musical Takes the Stage in Weston | Local News

Press Release: Mo Willems’ Beloved Pigeon Takes Center Stage in New Musical

After captivating readers for over two decades, Mo Willems’ iconic pigeon from "Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!" is set to star in a musical adaptation, “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus: The Musical!” This creative endeavor, which runs from June 17-29, will be presented by the Weston Young Company at Walker Farm and will tour across Southern Vermont, offering free performances.

Originally published in 2003, "Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!" has transcended generations, earning its place among the “Top 100 Picture Books” by School Library Journal in 2012. The story captures the hilariously determined pigeon who desperately wants to drive a bus, prompting readers of all ages to shout “Noooo!” as he implores them for their approval. Willems emphasizes the interactive nature of his stories, stating they are intended to be "played," not merely read.

The musical retains the pigeon’s quest while providing a fresh perspective on his antics. Rather than simply exploring why he can’t drive, it delves into deeper questions of capability and self-awareness, all while maintaining the whimsy and charm that fans adore.

Willems, an Emmy Award-winning writer initially involved with "Sesame Street," has authored over 70 children’s books, focusing on themes of identity, resilience, and the humor found in failure. He views storytelling as a growth process, where ideas can flourish unexpectedly over time.

Directed by Michael Mendez, this production also celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Weston Young Company, founded by Tim Fort. For attendees, reservations can be made through westontheater.org/pigeon or by calling 802-824-5288. Performances will be held outdoors, with options for shelter from inclement weather. Audience members are encouraged to bring low-profile seating, sunscreen, and picnic supplies for a delightful day of theater.
