Press Release: Growing Movement for Alcohol-Free Social Spaces in Vermont
By Myla van Lynde, Community News Service
Vermont is witnessing a transformative movement aimed at making social spaces more inclusive for those who refrain from alcohol consumption. The trend is gaining traction in bars, corporate events, college campuses, and restaurants.
Lisa Danforth, founder of tonique—a mobile alcohol-free bar service—has been at the forefront of this initiative since its inception two years ago. "Our mission is to foster sober-inclusive environments," she explained. At corporate events, Danforth offers a nonalcoholic bar alongside traditional options, which has resonated with attendees. "People often express gratitude for feeling seen and included," she added. Through alcohol-free mixology classes, Danforth challenges preconceptions about nonalcoholic drinks, noting that nearly all participants return for a second drink.
Aaron Wisniewski, founder of Alice and the Magician, has also contributed to this shift with his nonalcoholic cocktail, Guinep, launched this year. Initially met with skepticism, Guinep has now found its place in over 120 establishments across Vermont, reflecting a significant cultural shift towards acceptance of alcohol-free beverages.
At Middlebury College, health educator Anna Hand advocates for a harm reduction approach to alcohol consumption, emphasizing open conversations without stigma. This proactive attitude fosters a healthier relationship with alcohol among students and the broader community.
Moreover, Liz Zaccor, inspired by the “sober dance party” scene in New York, is bringing a new alcohol-free gathering, SHAKE, to Burlington this June. Her vision is to create a joyous space for connection without the focus on alcohol, aiming to attract a diverse crowd eager for fun, substance-free experiences.
These initiatives signal a growing recognition of the need for inclusive social environments, paving the way for a healthier culture around alcohol consumption in Vermont.
