Middlebury Launches Unique Canine Campaign for Dog Mayor
MIDDLEBURY, VERMONT — In a delightful twist on the electoral process, Middlebury is set to elect its first-ever dog mayor, a charming initiative that combines community spirit with a meaningful cause. This unique campaign is part of a fundraising effort celebrating the 50th anniversary of Homeward Bound, Addison County’s Humane Society.
“While you can’t buy a real-world election, for dog mayor, money talks,” stated Hannah Maney, director of Homeward Bound. The fundraiser allows residents to vote for their favorite canine candidate with a $5 donation, enabling supporters to cast multiple votes. All proceeds will benefit shelter animals across the region.
The town quickly embraced the idea, with enthusiastic approvals from the new town manager, Mark, and the Selectboard. Following a round of community nominations, four canine finalists emerged:
- Ed, a Barcco Italiano advocating for animal rights;
- Tela, a Goldador promoting community comfort during winter;
- Reggie, an Australian shepherd mix raising awareness for spaying and neutering;
- Nat, a Yorkipoo and retired service dog focused on fundraising for the shelter.
David Bennett, Ed’s owner, emphasized the importance of shelter dogs as valuable companions, stating, “They’re not always neglected or broken; sometimes their situations change, and they need a change in life.”
The joyous campaign has also attracted support from beyond Middlebury’s borders, with residents like Page Russell from Vergennes praising the event for its ability to spread smiles. “What better for smiles than dogs?” she remarked.
Voting for Middlebury’s dog mayor remains open until Friday, June 13. Residents can participate by visiting the Homeward Bound website to donate and cast their votes.
