Boeing’s airplane deliveries to China will resume next month after a hiatus attributed to trade tensions during the Trump administration. CEO Kelly Ortberg announced this development, emphasizing that China has confirmed their intent to accept deliveries. Previously, deliveries were stalled, but Ortberg now states that the first aircraft will be handed over soon.
Boeing, a major U.S. exporter, has faced tariffs on imported components from countries like Italy and Japan, particularly affecting its Dreamliner aircraft produced in South Carolina. Ortberg explained that while some duties apply to U.S. deliveries, they can largely be recuperated on exports.
Despite the evolving trade landscape, marked by numerous pauses and exemptions, Ortberg expressed confidence that these tariffs would not be permanently detrimental. He also highlighted Boeing’s plans to boost production of the 737 Max jet. After facing production caps due to safety issues, Ortberg indicated that output could potentially rise from 38 to 42 jets per month by midyear, with a future goal of reaching 47 jets per month.
Additionally, the Max 7 and Max 10 variants are expected to receive certification by year-end. Airline executives have commended Ortberg’s leadership in navigating Boeing through crises and production delays, particularly in light of the post-pandemic travel surge. United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby noted that while there have been complications in deliveries, he believes Boeing is moving in a positive direction, despite broader supply chain challenges that have complicated their delivery timelines.
