College of the Canyons Launches Pharmacy Technology Program, Accepting Applications Now
Santa Clarita, CA – The College of the Canyons (COC) is excited to announce the launch of its new Pharmacy Technology program, now open for applications for its inaugural cohort of 18 students until June 30. Set to begin in fall 2025, this program aims to prepare students for entry-level positions as pharmacy technicians in various environments, including hospitals, retail, and specialty pharmacies.
Dr. Thea Sweo Alvarado, interim assistant superintendent/vice president of instruction at COC, articulated the program’s significance, stating, “This program was created in response to the need for certified pharmacy technicians in our community.” A vital component of the curriculum is a required externship, enabling students to gain hands-on experience in real pharmacy settings, ensuring they enter the workforce job-ready.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has projected a 7% growth in pharmacy technician jobs from 2023 to 2033, signaling strong demand in the field. Graduates of COC’s program will qualify to apply for a California Pharmacy Technician license and sit for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE).
The two-semester curriculum includes courses ranging from Pharmacy Calculations and Pharmacology to Community Pharmacy Operations and Sterile Compounding Labs. Students will benefit from simulation labs, offering practical training.
To provide prospective students with more information, COC will host a Zoom information session on June 10 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Interested participants must register by noon on the same day to receive Zoom credentials.
