Special Olympics Vermont Kicks Off Annual Summer Games in Colchester
COLCHESTER, Vt. – The annual Special Olympics Vermont summer games commenced with an opening ceremony at Saint Michael’s College, celebrating the dedication and excitement of athletes from across the state. "We spend a lot of time getting ready for these games," said Kelsey Conway, Vice President of Mission Advancement. "The minute we finish one year, we start planning for the next."
Since its inception in 1971, the games have become a vibrant gathering for approximately 500 athletes competing in sports like basketball and bocce. "Special Olympics is a joyful movement," Conway noted. "It’s not just about sports; it’s about creating social connections among the athletes."
Prior to the ceremony, a unified basketball game showcased teams coached by Sen. Peter Welch and State Treasurer Mike Pieciak. NBC5’s Yunier Martinez, who played for Team Pieciak, shared his gratitude and excitement. "I’m a little nervous, but that just means I’m excited," he said. The event fosters a spirit of camaraderie and anticipation, especially as athletes look forward to the upcoming USA Games in Minnesota next year.
"I’m ready for it," said athlete Daniel Goodrow. "Let the games begin!"
Despite some weather challenges, organizers made adjustments, including moving the opening ceremony indoors, while bocce remains outside. The games, which are free to attend, run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, inviting community members to celebrate the power of sports and inclusivity.
