Vermont National Guard Infantry Battalion Demonstrates Combat Readiness Alongside NATO Allies

U.S. Soldiers Engage in Large-Scale Combat Exercise in North Macedonia

KRIVOLAK, North Macedonia – From May 29-31, 2025, U.S. Soldiers of the 3rd Battalion, 172nd Infantry Regiment (Mountain) of the Vermont National Guard participated in a high-stakes combined arms live-fire exercise (CALFEX) as part of Immediate Response 25, a key component of DEFENDER 25—a multinational exercise emphasizing NATO’s deterrence and readiness.

This major initiative, running from May 11 to June 24, assembles forces from 29 Allied and partner nations to enhance operational capabilities amid evolving global threats. With an emphasis on rapid deployment and combined training, DEFENDER 25 aims to increase the lethality of NATO forces through extensive tactical maneuvers and long-range fire exercises.

“Engaging in these large exercises highlights our interoperability with NATO partners,” said Lt. Col. Nathan Fry, commander of the 3rd Battalion. “These exercises ensure we can integrate and maximize our combat capabilities.”

The CALFEX utilized a crawl-walk-run approach, progressing from dry runs to live fire operations over three days. The event showcased joint tactical operations between U.S. and Hellenic forces, culminating in a formidable live-fire assault involving AH-64 Apache helicopters and various artillery systems.

A significant moment occurred when U.S. forces detonated an M58 Mine-Clearing Line Charge (MICLIC), creating a safe path through obstacles, underscoring the coalition’s joint capabilities amid dynamic conditions.

As the exercise concluded, collaboration and communication were paramount in overcoming challenges. “Working alongside our Greek partners was a testament to our readiness and adaptability,” noted Staff Sgt. Trever Lacasse. Immediate Response 25 not only tested military skills; it forged deeper alliances and bolstered trust among the coalition partners.

As U.S. and Allied troops showcased their readiness and coordination during the drills, the exercise reflected the overarching mission of DEFENDER 25 in ensuring a robust defense posture in Europe.
