Community College of Vermont Celebrates Graduation of Class of 2025
The Community College of Vermont (CCV) proudly celebrated the graduation of over 500 students today at Norwich University’s Shapiro Field House. Graduates hailed from all 14 Vermont counties and represented 11 states and 19 countries, ranging in age from 18 to 64, including 42 veterans and military-connected individuals. Remarkably, more than 60% of this year’s graduates are the first in their families to earn a college degree.
Keynote speaker Sara Byers, co-owner and president of Leonardo’s Pizza, inspired attendees with her message to "live true to yourself, love fully, and dream beyond big." Drawing from her own experiences, Byers encouraged graduates to pursue their dreams and embrace authenticity, reminding them, “Harness all your impossible dreams. This is where your mark is made.”
Student speakers Thomas Huster and Samantha Greene echoed themes of resilience and courage in their addresses. Greene emphasized the importance of facing life’s challenges and making hard choices. “We often overlook the fact that we get to choose our own hard,” she stated. Meanwhile, Huster, who began his college journey later in life, offered a message of lifelong learning. “To anyone out there who thinks it’s ‘too late’—please hear this: it’s never too late to believe in yourself again,” he affirmed.
Vermont Governor Phil Scott also spoke, reassuring graduates about the uncertainties they may face ahead. He emphasized the impact of their choices, saying, "The good you do is up to you…there’s no such thing as a small need."
During the ceremony, several individuals were honored for their academic and community contributions, including CCV-Rutland student Amelia-Hope Porpeglia and CCV-Winooski student Harriet Wiringiye, who received the Student Leadership Award.
CCV President Joyce Judy commended the graduates for their determination and resilience, noting many will continue their education at four-year institutions. CCV remains Vermont’s second-largest college, serving over 10,000 students annually through its numerous campuses and online programs, ensuring accessible education for all.
