It’s No Longer Bernie Sanders’s Vermont

Vermont Politics Shift as Democrats Face Defeat

MONTPELIER, Vermont — A remarkable political transformation is unfolding in Vermont, historically one of America’s most progressive states. Recent elections have seen widespread discontent with rising crime rates and economic stagnation, leading to a shift in political representation.

Despite Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris winning the rural state by a significant margin—64% to 32% against former President Donald Trump in 2024—Vermont voters drastically reshaped the state legislature. Over two dozen Democratic legislators were ousted, diminishing the party’s supermajority power and enabling Republican Governor Phil Scott to wield greater influence in Montpelier.

In the 150-member House, Republicans surged from 37 to 56 seats, while Senate GOP representation doubled from seven to 13. This shift marks the largest loss for Democrats in Vermont’s history. Even Bernie Sanders—a longstanding emblem of American socialism—faced a downturn in support, garnering only 63% of the vote against a little-known Republican challenger, down from previous wins of up to 71%.

Vermont’s economic struggles, exacerbated by inflation, have fueled voter frustrations. According to a December 2024 report, the average household spends about $980 more per month than in January 2021, with significant increases in food and housing costs.

Governor Scott, widely popular and centrist, has deftly navigated the political landscape, balancing left-leaning constituents with Republican initiatives. His recent vetoes of Democratic legislation indicate a newfound leverage, allowing him to advocate for reforms such as overhauling school funding and curbing strict housing regulations.

The electoral upheaval positions Vermont as a battleground shifting toward a more balanced two-party system, reflecting broader trends of disillusionment among voters in traditionally blue states. As economic challenges persist, both parties will need to address constituents’ concerns to remain relevant in an evolving political climate.
