MONTPELIER — A Republican Flag Day celebration at the Vermont Statehouse took a chaotic turn Saturday, June 14, as tensions erupted between pro-Trump supporters and anti-Trump protesters. The event, celebrating President Donald Trump’s 79th birthday and the 250th Anniversary of the U.S. Army, was intended to be a peaceful gathering hosted by local Republican figure Gregory Thayer.
The festivities began with Thayer addressing around 30 supporters before being interrupted by Matthew Baker, who smashed a water bottle into a cake adorned with the message, “Happy Birthday U.S Flag, U.S. Army + President Trump.” The incident escalated quickly: Thayer confronted Baker, leading to a physical altercation where he shoved Baker, and in response, threw the water bottle back at him.
Despite the incident, the cake was ultimately served, although the event concluded approximately ten minutes early. The initial atmosphere was friendly, but rapidly soured as arguments began, particularly surrounding immigration issues. Pro-Trump and anti-Trump attendees exchanged heated words, with interruptions from protesters.
In an effort to de-escalate the situation, Thayer invited an older liberal woman to speak about fostering dialogue among differing opinions. However, her call for civility was largely drowned out by discordant shouts from the crowd.
Attendee Tonya Cicio expressed her unwavering support for Trump, stating, “There’ll never be another president like him again.” The event underscored the deep divisions in American political discourse, providing a vivid illustration of the challenges of civil discussions amidst fervent ideological divides.
