Press Article: Vermont and Northern New York Spotlighted in ‘No Kings’ Protests
Vermont and Northern New York became a hub of activism as over 40 protests occurred, part of the nationwide ‘No Kings’ rallies. These demonstrations featured a "Relay for Democracy," driven by 50-50-1 Vermont and other organizations, showcasing a ceremonial American flag journeying from Williamstown, Massachusetts, to the Canadian border, rallying support in towns along the way.
In Rutland, protesters gathered at the intersection of Route 7 and West Street, voicing concerns over President Donald Trump’s perceived overreach of power, particularly regarding military policies. Ex-Marine Stephen Foley expressed his displeasure over recent military changes, claiming they unfairly target individuals based on race or gender.
The largest gathering took place in Burlington at Waterfront Park, where four marches converged. Speakers included Congresswoman Becca Balint and activist Luis Javier Ramírez, who shared his harrowing experience of being detained and transferred across several states. "Thanks to the community, today I’m here, free," he stated, resonating deeply with the audience.
In Montpelier, the atmosphere shifted significantly as a counter-protest celebrated Trump’s birthday and the military’s 250th anniversary, leading to heightened tensions between groups. Verbal exchanges quickly escalated into physical confrontations, prompting security and police intervention.
Despite the disruptions, many participants emphasized the importance of using peaceful protest to express their concerns over democracy’s fragility. Julie Hume from Kansas City articulated this sentiment, stating, "Our democracy is in danger, and we want to make our voices heard."
While the day’s events saw moments of contention, they highlighted a growing movement advocating for democracy and accountability across Vermont and beyond.
