Vermonters Protest "No Kings Day" Against Trump Administration Policies
On Saturday, over 3,000 Vermonters gathered for "No Kings Day," a nationwide protest against the Trump administration, organized by the group 50501 Vermont. Events were held across more than thirty cities and towns, including a large assembly at the Burlington Waterfront. The protests coincided with a military parade in Washington D.C., and are seen as a response to policies perceived as threats to democracy.
Participants in Burlington sang, chanted, and listened to speakers who highlighted various issues, including budget cuts, immigration enforcement, and restrictions on scientific funding. A poignant “die-in” was staged to express collective grief over these policies.
Vermont Congresswoman Becca Balint addressed the crowd, emphasizing that the rights and laws governing the nation are under daily threat. She criticized not just the Trump administration but also its supporters who enable harmful agendas. Among those sharing their stories was Mohsen Mahdawi, a lawful permanent resident who was detained by immigration authorities and whose case raised concerns over political repression.
The rally also spotlighted recent detentions linked to immigration enforcement. Just as protests were unfolding, the advocacy group Migrant Justice announced the arrest of a family by Border Patrol, drawing further outrage and prompting calls for solidarity from the attendees.
Emphasizing a strong sense of community, childhood friends Haley Frink and Tinesha Schaer voiced their concerns about the future of their children in an uncertain political climate. The day’s events called on all Americans, regardless of party lines, to advocate for civil liberties and unite against a system perceived to erode freedoms.
Protesters left motivated, emphasizing their commitment to defending human rights and nurturing a democratic society.
