New York and Vermont Governors Discuss Trade with Canadian Leaders

Governors Converge in Boston to Address Trade Tensions with Canada

BOSTON — Amid rising trade tensions stemming from federal tariffs, governors from Vermont and New York are set to meet with Canadian premiers and northeastern U.S. state leaders in Boston on Monday morning. The meeting, organized by Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey, aims to discuss collaborative strategies to mitigate the impacts of tariffs that have strained local economies.

Participating leaders include governors from Maine, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, along with seven Canadian premiers. Both Vermont Gov. Phil Scott and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul have been vocal critics of the tariffs announced by the Trump administration, particularly those affecting Canada. "It’s no secret that Canada is an important trading partner to the United States, and especially to us here in Vermont," Scott stated, emphasizing that increasing tariffs was not a prudent decision.

With a $50 billion trade relationship at stake, Gov. Hochul expressed concern over the detrimental effects of the tariffs on small businesses, family farms, and local manufacturers in New York. "They’re devastating," she noted, stressing the urgency for governors to collaborate and protect their states from these financial burdens.

The upcoming meeting will serve as a bipartisan forum for leaders to address the fallout from the tariffs and explore avenues for maintaining strong trade relations with Canada. The focus will be on fostering cooperation that benefits local businesses and residents, ensuring that northeastern states can navigate these challenges collectively.

As trade dynamics evolve, these discussions highlight the importance of cooperation at the state level, particularly in maintaining economic resilience in the face of federal policy changes.
