Vermont Ski Areas Report Continued Growth Despite Weather Challenges

MONTPELIER — Vermont ski areas have reported a successful season, with increased skier visits despite weather difficulties. The state, known as a premier ski destination, remains the top ski state in the East and ranks fourth nationally for skier visits, as affirmed during Ski Vermont’s 56th Annual Meeting at Sugarbush Resort.

For the 2024-25 season, Vermont’s alpine ski areas recorded 4.16 million skier visits, up 1.1% from the previous year and 6.2% over the last decade. This growth outpaced the New England region’s 0.4% increase, though it slightly lagged behind the national average of 1.7%. Ski areas operated for an average of 117 days this season, which is lower than the 10-year average of 123 days. Notably, an average snowfall of 218 inches this season, up 19 inches from last year, boosted overall attendance.

Molly Mahar, President of Ski Vermont, attributed the growth in visitation to the dedication of ski areas in providing exceptional experiences and snow conditions. Investments in efficiency and snowmaking projects are focused on enhancing visitor attraction.

Although the season experienced a slow start in November, winter months brought favorable weather and ample snowfall. However, adverse conditions during key holidays and a lack of March snowfall negatively impacted visitation numbers. Additionally, decreased Canadian visits due to political tensions posed a challenge, with Canadians making up a significant portion of visitors at northern resorts.

On a brighter note, Vermont’s cross-country ski areas enjoyed a remarkable 37% increase in visits, totaling 322,353, compared to last season.

At the annual meeting, accolades were given to industry veterans for their service: Kelly Pawlak received the Industry Achievement Award while several long-serving employees were recognized for their decades of commitment to Vermont’s ski community.
