Adriana Smith, a brain-dead pregnant woman in Georgia, had her baby delivered on Friday via emergency Cesarean section, as mandated by the state’s near-total abortion law, the LIFE Act. Her family, including her mother April Newkirk, reported that the baby, named Chance, weighed around 1 pound 13 ounces and is currently in the neonatal intensive care unit. Newkirk expressed hope for Chance’s survival and appealed for prayers.
Adriana, who had been hospitalized since February after experiencing severe headaches, was initially treated at Northside Hospital but released before her condition worsened. After being found in a critical state by her boyfriend, Adriana was transferred to Emory University Hospital. CT scans revealed multiple brain blood clots, leading to her being declared brain-dead.
Under Georgia law, which prohibits abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, the family felt compelled to keep Adriana on life support to potentially save the fetus. While exceptions to the law include circumstances involving the woman’s health, the Georgia Attorney General’s office clarified that the LIFE Act does not necessitate maintaining life support after brain death, indicating that withdrawing support is not considered termination of pregnancy.
Republican state Senator Ed Setzler, a sponsor of the law, supported the hospital’s decision to try to save the baby, reinforcing the value of innocent life. In response to queries, Emory Healthcare stated that it follows legal guidelines and expert consensus in its medical practices.
Adriana Smith’s condition has led her family to prepare for her removal from life support, with Newkirk acknowledging the emotional difficulty of the situation.
