Rockingham Selectboard Advances Key Projects and Policies

BELLOWS FALLS, Vt. – June 10, 2023

During its recent meeting, the Rockingham Selectboard addressed important infrastructure and community development initiatives, with a focus on the upcoming replacement of Bridge 38 on Route 5, initially constructed in 1929. Representatives from VTrans presented details on the project, which aims to replace deteriorating parts of the bridge, widen the roadway to accommodate 10-foot lanes with 4-foot shoulders, and enhance traffic safety. The bridge is set to close for approximately 28 days, with construction anticipated from July 14 to August 11, and a completion target of October 15. For any inquiries, residents can contact Natalie Boyle at VTrans, who will provide weekly updates.

Municipal Manager Scott Pickup reported on various redevelopment efforts, announcing a grant to install six new lampposts in downtown and an upgrade of street lighting on Bridge Street. However, he noted that significant federal funding for improvement projects, including a previously applied Thriving Communities grant, has been canceled.

Additionally, the board approved progress regarding the cleanup of 66 Atkinson Street, considering future use options for median-income housing. Board Chair Peter Golec recognized Kevin Kingsbury’s official appointment as the new Chief of the Rockingham Volunteer Fire Department.

In other decisions, a contract for documenting cemetery monuments was awarded to Tricia Suriani for $19,220, funded by perpetual care resources. The board also finalized discussions on the town flag policy, adopting criteria inspired by Montpelier’s guidelines to allow for the flying of special flags. Following these deliberations, the board approved the display of a Pride banner at the town-owned train station for the remainder of June. The next board meeting is scheduled for July 22 to ratify recent decisions.
