Vermont Legislators Conclude 2024-2025 Session with Education Bill
MONTPELIER, Vt. — Vermont’s elected leaders marked the conclusion of the 2024-2025 legislative session after five and a half months of debates and deliberations. The primary outcome of the session, an education bill, is now on its way to Governor Phil Scott’s desk following a decisive vote of 96 to 44.
In a session-ending address, Governor Scott commended lawmakers for their dedication to pressing issues such as public safety, affordability, housing, and education. He emphasized that while progress has been made, the journey ahead is daunting. “We cannot make the mistakes others have made and assume that our crises are resolved,” he cautioned.
The session was notably extended due to challenges in finalizing the education bill, which saw some lawmakers inadvertently approving it after losing track of the voting process. House Speaker Jill Krowinski affirmed that the legislative body would continue engaging stakeholders—teachers, parents, and local leaders—to refine the legislation and address potential hiccups.
Despite the bill’s approval, opinions about its impacts vary. While many towns are expected to benefit from a reduction in property taxes, up to 20 communities could experience increases, although specifics remain uncertain at this stage. “When the governor, House, and Senate all come away slightly dissatisfied, it indicates compromise was achieved,” remarked St. Albans representative Casey Toof.
