Federal Judge Blocks Trump’s Election Overhaul; Vermont Officials Applaud Decision
Vermont officials are celebrating a significant legal victory following a federal judge’s ruling that halted President Donald Trump’s controversial effort to change U.S. election laws. The ruling, issued by Judge Denise Casper of the U.S. District Court in Massachusetts, sided with a coalition of Democratic state attorneys general, including Vermont’s Attorney General Charity Clark. The group previously filed a lawsuit asserting that Trump’s Executive Order No. 14248, aimed at reinforcing voter ID requirements and altering ballot counting procedures, violated constitutional rights.
Trump’s administration defended the order as a measure to protect the integrity of elections, claiming it addressed noncitizen voting—a phenomenon studies have shown is virtually nonexistent. The lawsuit argued that the President does not possess the constitutional authority to rewrite state election laws or modify federally established voting regulations.
"I am deeply troubled by this naked attempt to disenfranchise voters,” Clark said. "An American’s right to vote is sacred and must be protected." The ruling highlights broader implications for voter accessibility, particularly for marginalized groups, including low-income individuals and active military personnel.
In addition to affirming the states’ position, Judge Casper noted that the proposed regulations would burden states with significant logistical challenges and expenses. This ruling represents another legal setback for Trump’s election directives, following a similar decision made by a federal judge in Washington, D.C.
Vermont’s Secretary of State Sarah Copeland Hanzas echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the state’s commitment to safeguarding voting rights at a time when such efforts are increasingly essential. With crucial midterm elections approaching, Vermont officials remain vigilant in defending electoral integrity, reaffirming that making voting more accessible is key to a thriving democracy.
