Harwood Union Celebrates Dual Triumph with Lacrosse Championship and Graduation
June 15, 2023
Harwood Union’s graduating class of 11 seniors marked a momentous day on June 14, celebrating both their graduation and a hard-fought victory in the Division II lacrosse championship, clinching the title with a 7-4 win over Hartford. This victory stands as Harwood’s third championship in eight seasons.
Head coach Chris Lamonia highlighted the team’s outstanding defense and senior leadership as pivotal to their success. "Our middie defense was phenomenal with Eli Herrington and Levi Colon, and Evan Andrews was incredible in goal," said Lamonia. "He is the heart and soul of our team and made crucial stops throughout the game."
The highly anticipated rematch opened with Harwood striking first, scoring four consecutive goals. However, Hartford surged back with three quick goals, narrowing the gap by halftime. Harwood experienced a tense stretch of nearly 27 minutes without scoring but rallied late in the game to seal their victory.
The Highlanders executed a balanced attack, with Eamon Langlais and Milo Lavit both netting two goals and adding one assist each. Additional contributions came from teammates Charlie Lamonia, Joshua Dietz, and Brycen Scharf, who also scored.
Despite early missed opportunities from both sides, Harwood took control with a strong opening. After leading 4-0 at one point, they managed to fend off a determined Hartford comeback. The pivotal moment came late in the game when Dietz and Langlais each scored crucial goals that secured Harwood’s lead until the final whistle.
The team’s senior class, featuring key players like Andrews, Langlais, and Martens, leaves a legacy of excellence in Harwood’s lacrosse program. With a talented junior and sophomore crew poised for a strong future, the Highlanders are set to continue their winning tradition.
