Vermont Braces for Intense Heat and Thunderstorms

Vermont is gearing up for a wave of intense summer weather, with the National Weather Service (NWS) issuing warnings of severe heat, humidity, and thunderstorms expected through Wednesday. Meteorologist Seth Kutikoff from the NWS in Burlington forecasts temperatures soaring into the mid to upper 80s, with potential for damaging winds associated with afternoon and evening storms. While cooling will arrive on Friday, heat is anticipated to return by the weekend, particularly on Saturday night, when severe thunderstorms are likely.

Kutikoff cautioned residents to remain vigilant for severe thunderstorm alerts. The forecast indicates that Burlington could experience temperatures around 97 degrees next week, potentially tying the second warmest June temperature recorded in the past 30 years. The heat is expected to be felt statewide, with Champlain and Winooski Valleys among the hardest-hit regions.

In light of the rising temperatures, the Vermont Department of Health is updating cooling centers across the state, ensuring relief for those without air conditioning. Jared Ulmer, climate and health program manager, highlighted that Vermont has one of the lowest air conditioning rates in the U.S., with only 67% of homes equipped for cooling.

The state is increasingly facing heat-related health issues, especially as climate change drives temperatures higher. According to the Vermont Climate Assessment, emergency room visits for heat-related illnesses have surged since 2003. The Department of Health is providing heat safety tips and resources, emphasizing the need for increased awareness as heat becomes a growing concern for Vermonters.

With the forecasted heatwave, residents are urged to stay hydrated, utilize cooling centers when necessary, and plan outdoor activities wisely, particularly during peak temperature hours.
