Milton Hosts Culinary Celebration for Juneteenth

MILTON, VT — On June 21, Humble Revelry will hold its sixth Better Days Supper Club, a seven-course dinner dedicated to celebrating African American history and the significance of Juneteenth. Chef and owner Pop Gonyon emphasizes that the event transcends food; it aims to educate and foster community connections.
“Personally, it’s 100% about the lack of education surrounding Juneteenth,” Gonyon stated. He expressed concern that the meaning of this important day, which commemorates the arrival of federal troops in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, to enforce emancipation, is at risk of fading amid its recent federal recognition.
This year’s supper club menu is enriched by the flavors of emancipation-era cuisine, featuring innovative dishes like the Lincoln Hill Soul Roll and Emancipation Salad. “We take local ingredients and create things that have never been eaten before,” Gonyon remarked, highlighting dishes such as Crayfish Étouffée and Maybuery WV Ribs.
Beyond the culinary experience, the event will foster a communal atmosphere nurtured by live music from Bobbie Duncan and percussionist Victor Twiggs, encouraging guests to connect over shared meals and stories. “I want people to feel comfortable, meet new people, and create memories,” Gonyon added.
Also at the forefront is a mission to teach local Black history, exemplified during a Black History Month event where Gonyon shared the story of Alexander Twilight, America’s first African American college graduate.
The Better Days Supper Club will take place at 6 p.m. at Humble Revelry, located at 197 U.S. Route 7. Tickets are priced at $100 per person or $175 for two and can be purchased by calling 802-891-1095. With limited seating available, this event promises a unique, unforgettable dining experience.
