UVM Men’s Soccer Team Celebrates National Championship with Historic Trip to Germany
Burlington, VT – The University of Vermont (UVM) men’s soccer team, fresh off their momentous NCAA national championship win in December 2024, is set to embark on a transformative journey to Germany this June. This significant trip, fueled by the philanthropic leadership of alumni like Peter Bernhardt ’72, aims to honor the players’ historic achievement and prepare them for the upcoming season.
Bernhardt, a former UVM player, expressed his deep emotional connection to the team, stating, “It reached me to my core.” Along with a dedicated group known as the "We Five," he has been instrumental in the team’s trajectory, advocating for resources and support to elevate UVM soccer’s status. Their ambitious goal, established in 2021, was to secure a national championship within five years. In just four years, they achieved that dream, culminating in a celebration that extends beyond the field.
The Germany trip is designed to strengthen team cohesion among returning players and new recruits, allowing them to train and grow within one of soccer’s most esteemed cultures. Associate Head Coach Brad Cole ’16 emphasized the trip’s dual purpose: celebrating past success while building a foundation for future victories.
This initiative coincides with broader developments in UVM Athletics, including the construction of a new athletic support building that will enhance the experience for community members attending events. For Bernhardt, athletics serve as a vital link between UVM and the Vermont community, fostering pride and unity.
As the team prepares for Germany, they carry the legacy of their championship title and embody the spirit of excellence that UVM represents. “They’re going to be national champions for the rest of their lives,” Bernhardt said, accentuating their role as ambassadors for the university and the state.
