Press Release: Federal Court Appearance for Woman Charged in Fatal Shooting of Border Patrol Agent
Teresa Youngblut is scheduled to appear in federal court on Tuesday in connection with the January shooting death of U.S. Border Patrol agent David Maland during a traffic stop in Vermont. Youngblut, alleged to have fired the fatal shot, faces serious charges including intentionally discharging a weapon toward law enforcement and assault with a deadly weapon. She has pleaded not guilty.
The incident unfolded when Maland pulled over Youngblut and her companion, Felix Bauckholt, who were reportedly clad in black tactical gear and armed. Following Youngblut’s gunfire, Maland returned fire, wounding her and killing Bauckholt. Both individuals are linked to an online cultlike group known as the Zizians, associated with Jack LaSota, a computer scientist whose interests span veganism, gender identity, and artificial intelligence.
Authorities have raised alarms over the Zizians, who are primarily composed of computer scientists sharing anarchist beliefs. The group has been implicated in several violent incidents, including killings in Pennsylvania and California.
Youngblut’s court appearance is part of a discovery hearing in Burlington, where evidence will be exchanged between the defense and prosecution. Both parties have refrained from commenting ahead of the hearing, with the defense counsel, Steven Barth, indicating no further statements will be made. Meanwhile, Fabienne Boisvert-DeFazio from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Vermont noted that they do not comment on ongoing cases.
Law enforcement had been monitoring Youngblut prior to the shooting due to her suspicious activities, including her and Bauckholt’s hotel check-in. The investigation continues amid growing concerns over the Zizians and their escalating violence.
