Burlington Square Set to Revitalize Downtown with New Developments
BURLINGTON, Vt. — The once-blighted area known as CityPlace Burlington is undergoing a remarkable transformation into Burlington Square. This ambitious project will comprise two new buildings, anticipated to be the tallest in Vermont, rejuvenating the heart of the Queen City.
The north tower will feature 315 mixed residential units targeting families, students, and low-income residents, alongside a hotel and retail or office spaces. In contrast, the south building will house 155 AC Marriott hotel rooms and 53 luxury apartments. It will also include a parking garage and plans to reconnect Pine and St. Paul streets, enhancing downtown accessibility.
Notably, the south building is nearing completion and is expected to welcome its first guests as early as August, with full operational status achieved by October. Josh Winegar, who oversees kitchen installations for the project, expressed excitement about working on what he deems his largest project to date.
Project manager David Farrington highlights the extensive teamwork involved, with over a hundred workers diligently finalizing construction tasks such as painting and flooring. The 11-story south building will offer a blend of retail on the ground floor – featuring Jitters Cafe – with hotel rooms and luxurious apartments above. Rent prices for these apartments may start at $2,000, with penthouses reaching up to $8,000, igniting debate over Burlington’s already rising rental rates.
Despite concerns over affordability, Farrington and other local business owners believe Burlington Square will invigorate the area, drawing more residents and bolstering local commerce. Store manager Jessica Johnson of Free People Movement expressed hope that increased foot traffic will positively impact locally-owned shops.
With the north building scheduled to open by summer 2027, Burlington Square marks a significant step towards revitalizing the downtown landscape.
