Local Author Celebrates Cowboy Life in New Book
Steamboat Springs, CO – Longtime resident Matt Tredway is set to release his new book, "The West: Essays of Mountain Cowboys," a heartfelt compilation of stories honoring the rich cowboy culture in the region. Tredway, who grew up in Gunnison embracing the cowboy lifestyle, draws on his personal experiences and the narratives of ranchers he has known throughout his life.
Due to hit local shelves in two weeks at Off the Beaten Path Bookstore, the collection will also be available soon at Abracadabra Bookstore in Gunnison and online this fall. Tredway’s book features tales from iconic Routt County ranching families, including the Greens, Daughenbaughs, and Stankos, and shares insights from respected ranchers such as Shane Yeager and the Hildreth brothers.
"I want readers to feel like they are walking through my tack room," Tredway explains, referring to his collection of Western memorabilia that includes saddles, spurs, and chaps. Each story is connected to these artifacts, making the memories even more vivid.
As a retired Steamboat Springs High School wrestling coach, Tredway dedicated a winter to interviewing ranchers, allowing the stories to flow quickly into written form. His insights reflect not only his familial heritage but also the diverse cowboy experiences that have shaped his life.
Tredway’s journey to compile these essays has been a collaborative effort, with editing and production support from Sophie Dingle and Melissa VanArsdale. This book promises to resonate with those who appreciate the unique tapestry of mountain cowboy life in Colorado.
