Cadet Program Returns to Vermont After Extended Hiatus

Vermont American Legion Law Cadet Program Makes a Comeback in Pittsford

PITTSFORD, Vt. — This week, over a dozen upper-class high school students and recent graduates from across Vermont are attending the rejuvenated Vermont American Legion Law Cadet Program at the Vermont Police Academy. After a hiatus since 2016 due to volunteer shortages, this year’s class marks a significant revival of the program, which previously directed interested students to a similar initiative in New Hampshire.

June Kelly, chair of the Law-and-Order Committee for the American Legion Department of Vermont, played a pivotal role in reviving the program. With 31 years in law enforcement and her own history in the program, Kelly noted the extensive effort involved in its reinstatement. “Lots of emails, lots of phone calls… sometimes in law enforcement, we’re our worst enemy because we’re so busy trying to get the job done that the recruitment piece can be tough," she said.

The weeklong program offers students a comprehensive view of law enforcement through hands-on activities, including firearm safety training, fingerprinting, and demonstrations on identifying signs of intoxication. According to Bill Cheron, a volunteer and legion commander in Castleton, the program serves a dual purpose: to inspire youth toward law enforcement careers and to provide valuable community insights.

Many cadets, like Addison Boynton from Brandon, are drawn to police work due to family influences. Boynton shares, “I got involved from my uncle—he was a state trooper, and I want to be just like him.”

The tuition for the program is $400, with many students receiving support from their local towns. The cadets will celebrate their graduation on Friday, highlighted by a keynote speech from Vermont Attorney General Charity Clark.
