Press Release: MSP Airport Implements Facial Recognition Technology to Streamline Customs Process
Minneapolis, MN – Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) has introduced new facial recognition technology to enhance the customs experience for international travelers. This cutting-edge system, deployed by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP), promises to significantly reduce waiting times at customs, particularly during peak travel hours.
The innovative system, known as the Enhanced Passenger Processing (EPP), has already demonstrated remarkable efficiency at O’Hare International Airport, cutting waiting times to see a customs officer by an impressive 74%. Additionally, this technology has contributed to a 20% to 45% decrease in passengers missing their connecting flights. As MSP anticipates similar outcomes, CBP officials will be available to assist travelers in utilizing the touchless system.
For those who prefer a more traditional approach, a live officer will still be accessible at the customs desk. According to CBP spokesperson, Bansbach, the EPP technology is designed with safety and security in mind, ensuring that all scans are erased from the system shortly after they are processed.
The introduction of this technology coincides with a surge in international travel through MSP, which set a record last year with 3,569,721 international passengers—over half of whom were arriving travelers. The recent launch of Delta Air Lines’ nonstop routes to Copenhagen and Rome has expanded the airport’s offerings, bringing the total to 35 nonstop international destinations.
As MSP continues to evolve to meet the growing demands of air travel, the adoption of facial recognition technology aims to provide a seamless and efficient experience for all travelers.
