Climeworks Secures $162 Million in Record Carbon Removal Investment
Climeworks, a leader in Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology, has made headlines by securing $162 million in equity funding, marking the largest carbon removal investment globally in 2025. This latest round of financing brings the company’s total funding to over $1 billion since its inception, reinforcing its position at the forefront of the carbon removal industry.
The funding round was led by significant investors, including BigPoint Holding and Partners Group, and saw strong participation from existing investors, showcasing their confidence in Climeworks’ technology and its ambitious mission to transform carbon removal processes.
The new capital will be directed towards enhancing Climeworks’ pioneering DAC technology, aimed at reducing carbon removal costs. The company’s Orca plant has already validated its innovative approach, while its second plant, Mammoth, is poised to scale and test new removal technologies. Noteworthy developments include doubled energy efficiency and increased filter material lifespan, key components in achieving the world’s first profitable DAC plant.
In addition to advancing technology, the funding will support the expansion of Climeworks’ diverse carbon removal portfolio. As demand surges, Climeworks is increasingly offering tailored, blended solutions that help companies invest in and navigate the carbon removal landscape. Analysts project the carbon removal market could reach $80 billion by 2030 and expand to $1 trillion by 2050.
Co-CEO Christoph Gebald emphasized the pivotal shift in the importance of DAC, stating, “Direct Air Capture has gone from experiment to essential.” He added that the hybrid model helps build long-term demand while generating immediate cash flow, cementing carbon removal as a vital aspect of climate solutions. As demand for carbon removal continues to grow, Climeworks stands ready to meet both immediate and future needs in this emerging market.
